Prioritizing When Everything Feels Important We live in a verybusyculture. Each day, we cram in a million things thoughts, reminders, tasks, habits, actions, deadlines you name it. We are constantly making plans, setting goals and telling each other how busy we are. And it all feels so important every last thing, from a work deadline to doing laundry to wishing a friend a happy birthday. So, how do you figure out which deadline or obligation to tackle first? How is it possible to prioritize, stay organized and maintain productivity wheneverythingfeels important?Prioritization is important for fulfilling both your short- and long-term goals. It will help you plan and devote your time and attention to the fruchtwein relevant and important tasks. Check out my go-to tips below to find out how you begin prioritizing effectively. 1. Get organized.I dont even departure prioritizing anything until my physical space is organized (enough) for me to focus. Whether its my work desk, classroom or home, this is always my first step, even if it means coming in early or staying up a bit later so I can hit the ground running the next day. An organized space helps your mind focus better, and the act of cleaning itself can help you process and relieve stress so youre ready to start planning when you finish. For even mora of a jumpstart, add upbeat music in your genre of choiceOnce my space is all set, its list-time. Whether you like to write out yourto-do listand color-code it in your bullet journal, write it out on lined paper, type it up in a Word doc or use ato-do list appor project management software, choose a platform or medium that makes you feel comfortable and roll with it. I like to start by free-writing, listing all of the things I need to get done that come to mind, without trying too hard to organize them at first. Then, Ill organize my lists by short-term (things I need to do pretty immediately, perhaps that day or by the end of tomorrow) and long-term (maybe thi ngs I want to get done in the next week or two, or beyond). You can define what those time limits are to you.2. Rank by importance, urgency and deadline.Once Ive got my lists planned out, ranking and re-organizing based on whatsimportant (What do I place the most value on? What will have the worst consequences if I dont get it done?), whats the mosturgent (Which demands my attention the most, or will affect other things if its elend completed? Which needs to be handled immediately?) and what are myupcomingdeadlines(What has a hard deadline? Which deadlines are first? Whats flexible?).As you ask yourself these questions, youll see that importance, urgency and deadlines dont always come together. Sometimes, something thats important to you may not have a deadline, so you keep putting it off, even though its important (i.e., scheduling a dentists visit or visiting a sick loved one). And sometimes things that seem incredibly urgent really arent that important (does your clientreallyneed a response to his email tonight?). Review how you rank and see what emerges, and set deadlines for things that dont have them, especially personal tasks/goals or work projects that are more on-going.3. Schedule accordingly.Colleagues have asked how I am able to keep track of everything all the time, not miss deadlines and keep all of my balls in the air at all times. My response is that I schedule everything. I schedule a follow-up call, a trip to the pharmacy, a one-week reminder to pick up a birthday card and another reminder for when to put it in the mail, because I know Ill forget. I want to use my brain to solve problems and think strategically, not cram it with a million deadlines Im going to get hazy on, anyway.For some tasks, Ill put them at the top of my Google Calendar as a reminder to get them done at some point that day, and for some tasks, Ill schedule a specific time to do them so I know I wont let it get away from me.4. Get anything that can be done in less than five minutes done now.Is there anything you can do in 5 minutes or less? Could be worth it to do it first, just to get it out of the way and then plan out the rest based on whats most important and urgent, and what deadlines are approaching. That way, youll feel less overwhelmed since you just took a chunk of items off of your list. Insert sigh of relief5. Throw out what you dont need.Are there some perpetual tasks that you just dont seem to be getting done, maybe because you just dont care about them or theyre not essential to your life anymore? Maybe you used to really care about seeing friends 3x/week, but now you find you prefer to spend week-nights in andweekends being social, instead. Take a look at your values whats most important to you right now in your life? Your career? Relationships? Personal development? And see if theres any clutter you can get rid of (or move to a really long-term list, to be re-evaluated later).6. Make a habit of looking ahead.One helpful piece of sched uling is that if you take time to look ahead each week, youll feel even more efficient and effective. Youll know whats coming, and you can prepare accordingly and never feel that anxious moment of surprise when you realize youre not 100% ready for that meeting or deadline.7. Get into routines.When it comes to prioritizing and time management, routines are key. Develop a morning and evening routine you stick to try to get up and go to bed at the same time each day/night. This will help you feel more even-keeled when it comes to tackling all of the tasks you have laid out for yourself each day, and youll feel alert enough to enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes with checking off items on your to-do list8. Plan time to plan time.One routine you should use is to plan a time when youplan your time. Trust me. Youll feel so much more relaxed, organized and perhaps even a little lessbusyif you do.Life is a pressure cooker, but setting manageable and realistic goals can help you deal with the stress. A familys retirement planning is a seat held up by three legs Social Security, retirement plans, and personal savings. All three legs are vital to living a stable retirement. Without one of the legs, the stool falls down. Social Security Most,but not all, government employees contribute to Social Security. This is critical because those who do not contribute to Social Security do not withdraw funds upon retirement or becoming disabled. Those government employees who do not contribute must ensure that the other two legs of the stool are strong. Social Security is a political football at the federal level. Politicians know uncomfortable choices must be made to continue the systems solvency, but no one wants to take the political hit of decreasing benefits or increasing contributions. This leg of the stool is particularly susceptible to wobbling because of the politics surrounding it. Social Security by itself will not sustain the lifestyle a beneficiary is accustomed to living. This leg should bear as little weight as possible. Retirement Plans Retirement plans simply are not what they used to be. Politicians have used public employees and their retirement benefits as scapegoats for out-of-control public budgets. Nevermind pork barrel spending and costly public assistance programs. Personnel is a large portion of any organizations budget, and scapegoating employees for this fact is a morale killer. Political maneuvering has taken its toll on retirement systems. Benefits have diminished while costs borne by employees have risen. While the private sector does not have to deal with politicians maiming their retirement benefits, private sector employees have also seen their retirement benefits shrink. In both sectors, the retirement plans stability is no longer the guarantee it used to be. Most federal employees contribute to the Federal Employees Retirement System. This system has its own three-legged stool of Social Security, an annuity payment and a personal savings plan called the Thrift Savings Plan. Federal employees who do not contribute to FERS contribute to the Civil Service Retirement System which is just an annuity. For both systems, the annuities are defined benefit plans. State and local governments that have their own retirement systems usually have defined benefit plans which require employee participation. Many have personal savings options like 401(k)s and IRAs, but those components are rarely mandatory. Personal Savings As mentioned earlier, some retirement systems have options or requirements for personal savings. The federal governments Thrift Savings Plan is mandatory to some extent. Agencies contribute an amount equal to a portion of an employees salary. The employee may contribute more. Contribution is incentivized by matching c ontributions up to a certain point meaning agencies will match or partially match what employees contribute of their own volition. When personal savings vehicles do not have matching features, public employees have no incentive to use the retirement system plan instead of those offered by private investment companies. Like many other government-sponsored personal savings plans, the Thrift Savings Plan offers limited investment options, compared to private investment companies. No matter how public employees choose to save for retirement, the important thing is that they actually save. The days of relying on Social Security and a pension are long gone. Maintaining Balance As the stool metaphor suggests, each leg of the stool is important. Government employees should pay attention to each leg and ensure it remains stable. Social Security and retirement plans are largely outside an employees control, so the distributions-mix employees can make the most difference in long-term stabi lity is personal savings. Public employees seeking to maximize their retirement security should consult financial advisors through their retirement systems or through private investment companies. Some retirement systems have arrangements with private financial consultants who work for reduced rates and have experience working with public employees.

Maintaining our unique points of view and bringing it to the table will ensure were irreplaceable.Annie nachhall Find inspiration in even the darkest places.Although writer/director Woody Allen has long maintained that Annie Hall wasnt an autobiographical film about his relationship with star Diane Keaton, she claimed otherwise. The similarities between the film and Allens own life are hard to ignore. But if we are to assume that his inspiration for the film was his rel ationship and breakup with Diane Keaton theres a great nugget of advice in the films success. In our lives and career we should look for inspiration in even the saddest places. A breakup, for example, although most often a somber event, can lead to a burst of creative inspiration. So stay tuned into your emotions and be open to inspiration, regardless of the source. If you experience a career setback, look see if theres a way to look at it as an opportunity.Gladiator Even the greatest career obstacles can be overcome.
